We may find ourselves approaching this familiar Advent theme from a new direction these days. We may well ask what it means to proclaim the jubilee, the year of the Lord’s favor, while we wait in uncertainty, in the darkest days of this pandemic, and as we begin to realize that this time of isolation and grief will continue on into the new year.
And yet we remain a people of hope, a people, like those before us, who search and wait and yearn for Christ’s incarnation in the world, for the year of the Lord’s favor, when captives will be freed and when our mourning will turn to gladness.
