NMAWM: The Acronym You Need to Know This August

Did you know that August is National Make A Will Month? Studies show that over 70% of Americans do not have a will in place. Many procrastinate, are uncertain about the process or don’t know where to begin, some think wills are too costly or too complex, others feel that they are just too busy with life, or maybe believe that wills are only relevant to the rich and famous. National Make A Will Month encourages everyone, regardless of age, income or health, to begin writing a will during the month of August.

There are many important reasons to have a will, even when the thought of making end-of-life decisions is too uncomfortable to fathom. Creating a will is a powerful way to ensure that your values and priorities are carried out, even when you think your family may already know what your wishes are. Should you suddenly become incapacitated, are unable to communicate, or heaven forbid pass away unexpectedly, your loved ones will understandably be in shock and distraught. Your will can help: it can act as a guide, prevent family conflict, eliminate any confusion that may arise, and reassure grieving family members while giving you peace of mind that your wishes can legally be fulfilled. When you have a valid will in place, your wishes must be followed to the greatest extent possible. That’s the law. Making a will includes healthcare directives and designating your financial power of attorney; these decisions are not dependent on age or affluence. The benefits of putting your estate plan in place are innumerable. Your will may be for the future, but peace of mind is a gift for the present.

None of us can predict the future. Making a will is a personal act of care for the people and causes you love, preventing unnecessary stress while enabling your loved ones to benefit from your foresight.
