REMEMBERING THE REV. NANCY SHIER
We will celebrate the life of our beloved Rev. Nancy Shier on Sunday, February 28th, at 1 pm.
Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints,
where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
The Rev. Nancy Katherine Shier, assistant priest at Church of Our Saviour, San Gabriel, and Immanuel Church, El Monte, died suddenly on Feb. 23. She was 84.
Survivors include her son William and daughter Katherine and five grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. outdoors at Church of Our Saviour, 535 W. Roses Road, San Gabriel 91775 (626.282.5147).
Shier ministered to the English-speaking congregation at Immanuel Church, and did pastoral work at Church of Our Saviour. “I help keep people connected to the life of our church who may have become limited in their ability to attend it,” she wrote in a brief biographical sketch.
Nancy Shier was born in Pasadena on May 31, 1938. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Stanford University in 1960 and a master’s degree at California State University in 1974. After a 20-year career as an English teacher at San Gabriel High School, she entered Claremont School of Theology/Bloy House, where she earned a master of divinity degree. Bishop Frederik H. Borsch ordained her as a deacon in October 2001; Bishop Chet Talton
ordained her to the priesthood a year later.
Shier enjoyed knitting and needlework, and was known for her kindness and pastoral heart – as well as an extreme love of cats, according to friends at Church of Our Saviour.
