A Surprise OSC Donation Story

Greetings from (Y)Our Saviour Center.

2021 promises to be another challenging year for the underserved of El Monte and greater San Gabriel Valley. While our Food Pantry continues to see high levels of client need, we want to share a story of the community helping one another!

In early January, Diane Williams, our Family Services Manager, was distributing food to “walk-up” clients (a small percentage of our clients do not have a car), when a man approached her station. This man wasn’t a client; he didn’t want food. Instead, he handed Diane a check for $500! A neighbor who lived close by, he said he had seen the long lines of cars at our Food Pantry, every week, for months. The check, he said, was “from my wife.” Not to be outdone by his wife, the man then reached into his wallet and peeled off $500, as a donation from HIM!

Doesn’t this just restore your faith in human nature? Diane, who has worked at Our Saviour Center for 16 years and volunteered here before THAT, said she doesn’t remember receiving a donation in quite this way before! We are taking it as a good omen for 2021.
